Here are the pre-requirements for the Modelling Workshop:

Please bring your laptops and install the following software before the workshop, as there won’t be time for installation during the session itself:

For the Geodynamic Modelling Workshop – exercise requirements

MATLAB

For the Thermodynamic Modelling Workshop – exercise requirements

As part of the workshop, you will be running melting and crystallisation models using a recently published Python package called “petthermotools” (Gleeson et al. 2026 – https://www.jvolcanica.org/ojs/index.php/volcanica/article/view/483), which allows for relatively easy use of different MELTS models (and also MAGEMin, if you’re able to install it successfully).

It would be great if you could all pre-install and test petthermotools in Python beforehand, so you can make the most of the two-hour timeslot for running the models.

Instructions for installing petthermotools are available here: https://petthermotools.readthedocs.io/en/latest/

You’ll be running the models using MELTS, so if (like Zoltán) you’re unsuccessful in installing MAGEMin within petthermotools, that’s not a problem.

After running the various models in Python, you will combine the thermodynamic modelling results with trace element partitioning models. The code for these calculations will be written in R, so it would also be useful to have R (and an IDE such as RStudio) installed.

You can download the most recent version of R here: https://cran.r-project.org/
And RStudio here: https://posit.co/downloads

Zoltán Taracsák will send further instructions and files closer to the start of the workshop.

If you run into any installation issues, feel free to get in touch with him at zt265@cam.ac.uk. He will be in Sopron throughout the workshop, so you can troubleshoot any issues in person before the practical session.
